Citrus Juicers

Citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes are quite hard to peel, so juicing them in a normal juicer would be a time-intensive and inefficient task. That’s why special citrus juicers have been developed, that makes juicing citrus fruits very easy. The fruits just need to be chopped in halves and then pressed on a reamer that extracts the juice, which is collected in a container below. There are manual and motorized models.

Citrus juicers are very easy to clean and are quick and easy to use, while being most efficient for this kind of fruits. So if you would like to enjoy a freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast, a citrus juicer would be the best choice. Most people own a citrus juicer and one of the other juicers from the categories below.

Centrifugal Juicers

This is the most popular kind of juicer, as prices in this category start pretty low and these kind of juicers produce juice very quickly. The fruits or vegetables are being grinded by a fast spinning blade disk. Due to the high speed of the disk oxygen is being pumped in the juice, which leads to the fact that it quickly oxidates. This means, that juice made with centrifugal juicers should always be consumed instantly.

Centrifugal juicers are not suitable for wheat grass and will produce only little juice out of other leafy foods like spinach, lettuce or herbs.

Centrifugal juicers are easy to operate and mostly easy to clean. Generally they don’t produce such high yields as triturating and masticating juicers.

There are two subcategories for centrifugal juicers:

  • automatic pulp ejection juicers

  • non pulp ejection juicers

The juicers with automatic pulp ejection are preferable, as the pulp is collected in a separate container, so you don’t have to stop and clean the juicer in the middle of a juicing session, as it would be the case with a non pulp ejection juicer.

A centrifugal juicer should be your choice, if you are looking for speed and easy cleaning.

Masticating Juicers

Masticating machines are working at a much slower speed, literally crushing and chewing the fruits and vegetables with a single auger, which makes it possible to extract a higher amount of enzymes, minerals and vitamins. So the quality and quantity of the juice is higher with this kind of juicers. The efficiency of these juicers is proved by the fact that the remaining pulp is very dry. Apart from that they offer a greater variety of uses, as most of them can also homogenize food or even grind grains into flour. Due to the lower speed, less oxygen is pushed into the juice, hence it can be stored longer and does not oxidate as fast as with a centrifugal juicer. Most of the masticating juicers are also suitable to juice wheat grass. They are a great middle way between centrifugal and triturating juicers.

Triturating (Twin gear) Juicers

Triturating juicers are using two intermeshing rotating stainless steel gears to crush and press the foods while using a very low speed. They are perfect for any kind of fruits or vegetables, also leafy greens, herbs, seeds and wheat grass. Even very hard or seemingly dry foods can be juiced with these juicers.

The advantages of twin gear juicers are the high yields and the more efficient extraction of nutrients. On the downside they are more difficult to clean and juicing takes much longer. They also take up more space, due to their form. High Quality has its price, so these juicers are usually found in the higher price range. But if you are really into juicing and want to get the most out of your organic fruits and veggies, a twin gear juicer is the one you should go for.

Wheat Grass Juicers

Wheatgrass juicers have been developed to juice exclusively wheatgrass and other leafy greens. They are not suitable for other vegetables or fruits, except very soft fruits like berries or grapes.

There are both, manual and electric models in the category of wheat grass juicers. We recommend a manual wheat grass juicer as the best choice to juice wheat grass. So why should you use a special wheat grass juicer? Because it prevents the enzymes to be destroyed by the centrifugal force of high speed juicers. Slow and steady is the way to juice here for best results.
